About George Needham: Before joining OCLC in 1999, George was State Librarian of Michigan. From 1993 to 1996, he was Executive Director of the Public Library Association, a division of the American Library Association. From 1990 to 1993, he was Director of Member Services of the Ohio Library Association. From 1984 to 1989, he served as Library Director of Fairfield County District Library in Lancaster, Ohio. From 1977 to 1984, he held various posts at the Charleston County Library in Charleston, South Carolina. George received a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in library science from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

- Wednesday, January 30, 2008, 7 to 9 p.m. Rutgers "502 Colloquium Event" (all are welcome). SCILS Room 212. Norma Blake, the NJ State Librarian and Library Journal Librarian of the Year will speak about how she succeeded in persuading the Legislature to fund the NJ Knowledge Initiative that provided higher education institutions and small businesses with access to specialized databases, and other achievements. Professor Dan O'Connor will describe the results of a New Jersey public opinion survey that asked whether libraries are a cultural amenity or an essential service. We also hope to hear about a current campaign advocating for NJ library services. This will be a "Library State of the State" event, not to be missed! Pat Tumulty, NJLA Executive Director, will also join us.

There is no charge to attend and there is no agenda except to network with colleagues in a semi-private, quiet space. - Thursday, May 10, 2007, 5:30 p.m. P-T SLA 40th Anniversary Celebration, at the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton Township, Mercer County. Stephen Abram, president-elect of SLA, will discuss "A Tech Forecast: Library 2.0 in the Real World." Celebration attendees will have access to the sculpture grounds and the museums from 10 a.m. on, so arrive early if you can. Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Join your NJ SLA colleagues for a wine tasting in Far Hills, close to Routes 202, 287 and 78. Bring a bottle of wine and/or hors d'oeuvres. Sept. 27, 2005: Pre-Lecture Gathering for SHHH … Your Image is Showing: Hollywood Looks at Librarians – Event held at the School of Communication, Information and Library Studies shortly before a fun lecture on the portrayal of librarians in movies. Lecture was co-sponsored by Rutgers University and the New Jersey and Princeton-Trenton professional chapters of SLA. New and returning students got together, made new acquaintances and heard a short discussion on the images of librarians in other countries. The group then went to Alexander Library, Rutgers’ keystone research library, for the main presentation.
Oct. 25, 2005: The Variety of Roles in Special Libraries – Four librarians offering differing perspectives on the special libraries field were the mainstays for this forum. Speakers represented the legal, pharmaceutical and academic information fields.
Nov. 15, 2005: Tour of St. Peter’s University Hospital Library, New Brunswick, N.J.: A visit to a working medical library.
Feb. 9, 2006: Librarians in the Pharmaceutical and Health Care Industries – Forum with three presenters on what it means to be a librarian for a drug company or health care organization.
Feb. 15, 2006: An Evening with Pam Rollo – The SLA president detailed her role at the first part of the World Summit on the Information Society, a critical international conference that attempted to resolve conflicts among nations regarding Internet access and control. Other topics included the NYPL Express fee-for-service operation Rollo now heads at New York Public Library and some sound career advice. Co-sponsored by NJSLA and Princeton-Trenton chapter.
March 22, 2006: Law Librarianship – Students returning from spring break heard from five panelists on the life of the law librarian, as well as issues in the field, courtesy of legal publisher Thomson West and the New Jersey Law Librarians Association.
April 6, 2006: Discussion Session on Future of Librarianship – In a reversal of roles, students got a chance to offer their opinions on the future course of librarianship and library education to research firm Outsell Inc. in a gathering co-sponsored by NJSLA.
April 10, 2006: Tour of St. Peter’s University Hospital – Repeat of a popular event held in the fall.
